For Introverts, Technology Is a Wizard

PC×Magic

Today, I’d like to talk about how technology and introverts go well together.
As an engineer myself, I feel a special connection to the world of technology 😌

Old Friends: Humanity and Technology

Long before we had modern tools, humanity was already walking hand in hand with technology — like childhood friends who grew up together.

Regardless of personality type, all of humankind has relied on tools to survive and evolve. Physically, we humans are rather fragile in the natural world. But by inventing and using tools — starting with fire, stone tools, paper, and the wheel — we’ve managed to overcome harsh environments and powerful predators.

This long journey of invention continued through the Industrial Revolution and now flows into the digital age of IT and AI.
Technology has always helped humans move forward — and I believe it plays an especially important role for introverts living in a society that tends to favor extroversion.

Primitive Age

Phone Calls and Emails: A Familiar Example

Let’s take a look at something simple and familiar: the telephone and email (or chat).
How do these two communication tools — old and new — differ from an introvert’s perspective?

The telephone’s origin can be traced back to the humble string phone, which transmitted sound as vibrations through a tight cord. In the 19th century, Graham Bell invented the electric telephone, allowing voices to travel across great distances. Of course, the telephone itself was groundbreaking technology. But compared to it, email — which arrived much later — brought about a different kind of communication. What makes email feel so different for introverts?

As I wrote in another article, “What is an introvert?” introverts often struggle with quick, on-the-spot responses. That’s because we tend to overthink things.

Take phone calls, for example.
You’re not just listening and replying — you’re also navigating greetings, tone of voice, speaking speed, pauses, word choices, timing, and how to end the conversation smoothly. That’s a lot to manage at once. For someone like me, it’s mentally exhausting 😅

Now compare that to email.
You can take your time.
Think things through.
Write what you really want to say.
And send it when you’re ready.

If a reply comes in, you can take your time again. No pressure. No sudden reactions. Just thoughtful, quiet communication — what a relief.

Of course, email isn’t the only tech that supports us. There are countless tools, but if I had to choose just one, it would be the Internet. It’s the backbone of all modern technology — and a dream come true for introverts. For those of us who tend to stay indoors, it opens up the world. It connects us with people, ideas, and opportunities, all without stepping into a crowd.

The Modern Wizard

Now, let me shift gears for a moment.

Have you ever played an RPG game?

— like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy? (I personally loved Final Fantasy, by the way 😆)
In those games, your party is made up of all sorts of characters — heroes, warriors, clerics, and of course… the wizard.

Make friends with technology.
It’s like recruiting a wizard to your team.

You can’t get very far in an RPG without one ? For the things the hero (that is, you) can’t do — like casting attack or healing spells — just borrow the power of your wizard: technology !

ABOUT US
おつう / O'tu
Hello! I’m a Japanese IT engineer in my 40s, and I’m married.

I've been writing a blog about introversion, and along the way I’ve come to realize that the challenges introverts face are universal, regardless of nationality.

That's what led me to start sharing my thoughts in English too.
